While the benefits of moving certain business applications to the cloud are widely understood, many organisations can be reticent to make the change – often for fear of disrupting their day-to-day processes, making an existing technology investment redundant, or risking the security of their data. With Taylor Lewis, however, the opposite was the case.

Challenge:

Helvoet Rubbers had just migrated from JD Edwards ERP to a new one. Client still had to keep the old system up and running for a short term to ensure the transition has been flawless. They also had to keep the old data accessible as a legal requirement. The legacy server however was not easy to maintain. The frequent breakdowns just increased the operational cost and getting technicians for the outdated servers wasn’t that simple. The client’s unique request was to terminate the legacy server and also keep the data accessible without affecting the user interface.

Deva Consultancy had already been providing the Application Support Services for the client for JD Edwards. The functional and technical team was already aware of the overall modules and workflows in the system. The team developed a mirror application of JDE World on IBM AS400 server. Team Deva also discovered a hosting solution provider for AS400 servers which was at a very reasonable cost. The team then migrated the old JDE data to the remotely installed AS400 server. Data was also kept on physical tapes as a back-up plan. Screens were designed as is so that the users didn’t require any training for the migration. The rigorous testing was carried out to ensure there was no discrepancy in the data and the applications worked in tandem with the old system. Post confirmation of the successful implementation, the legacy server was shut down permanently.

Result

Building the Remote Application was not only about saving time and money. At times the client would have downtimes which would last for days together because of the outdated server and limited number of technicians who could fix those servers. Further keeping an outdated server running only for a back up purpose was not a practical solution. Remote application on a rented and fully managed server gave the client 24x7 accessibility to back up data as and when required. All migration and implementation activities including the operational costs were brought down by over 80% and with 99.99% uptime guarantee.
